What is an IBCLC?

An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a health care professional that specializes in the management of breastfeeding. They are an essential part of our healthcare system. They are trained to assist you with every aspect of breastfeeding. While many may offer lactation support, an IBCLC is the Gold standard of education and certification. They are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, Inc. under the direction of the US National Commission for Certifying Agencies. An IBCLC works in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, and private practice. Always inquire about the consultants experience and credentials.

Will a consult with a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) make a difference?

Yes! Research has shown that IBCLC’s help improve health outcomes for breastfeeding mothers and babies. Women are more likely to stop breastfeeding within the first month when experiencing problems such as sore nipples, concerns about adequate milk supply, and infant difficulties. Both breastfeeding duration and exclusivity can be increased with assistance from a lactation consultant.

What is a Tongue Tie?

Tongue Tie or professionally known as Ankyloglossia is a congenital condition which anchors the tongue to the floor of the mouth by a membrane, the frenulum. This affects the tongue’s mobility and range of motion. It can result in significant difficulty with breastfeeding, feeding, speech, swallowing and various oral developments. There are several types of tongue tie which are classified by how close the attachment of the frenulum is to the tip of the tongue. Some infants will also have a tight lip, or labial frenulum as well. Each mother and baby is unique and may present with a variety of symptoms.

Some of the symptoms of tongue/lip tie are:

  • Poor latch and suck
  • Pinched, compressed, flattened nipples after feeding
  • Nipple pain/damaged nipples
  • Sliding off the nipple while attempting to latch
  • Clicking during feeding
  • Gumming or chewing of the nipple during feeding
  • Poor weight gain
  • Falling asleep while feeding
  • Reflux symptoms (Gassy, spitting up after feeds, colic)
  • Poor or incomplete breast drainage
  • Plugged ducts/mastitis
  • Short sleep episodes requiring frequent feeds
